The Havana Backpack Program will provide at-risk children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods for the weekend. Volunteers will meet on Thursday evening at the old park gym across from New Central School to fill back packs with food items for the weekend for these children.
The BackPack Program was created to ensure children are not going to bed hungry on the weekends, when school is not in session. One in every four children in Mason County lack regular access to food. About 60% of students at New Central students in Havana qualify for free and reduced meals.
The Havana Backpack Program is actively seeking monetary donations to purchase food and volunteers to help pack the bags of food.
